Core to purity culture is a concept called “complementarianism.” This is the teaching that men and women are equal in God’s eyes, but were designed to “complement” one another here on earth in a very particular way: Men were designed to be stereotypically “masculine” leaders, and women their stereotypically “feminine” supporters. JB: Why is the ongoing effect of the purity culture a feminist issue? I definitely felt that the story got better as it progressed, but it still pales in comparison to Gilman's novel set in the same world.understandable given the short length of this novellette. He is an idealist making the best of a bad world in the belief that it can only be made better. Ransom tells us his story, with varying levels of candour, through letters penned to various people and he proves to be an endearing character. Not only has his 'apparatus' once again been destroyed leaving him on the edge of poverty, but now he finds himself dealing with the machinations of a rival "scientist" (the rainmaker of the title) and the intrusion of the Line into the small western town he has found himself in as they cast their net in search of some characters we may be more familiar with from Gilman's larger tale. The Line is a mass organization of men, and I do mean men as in males not humans, working for The Engines. We follow, as his business cards state: "Professor" Harry Ransom, Lightbringer &c, &c (who made a small walk-on cameo in _The Half-Made World_), one part charlatan and two parts idealistic scientist, as he finds himself pulled into the midst of the inescapable war between the Line and the Gun. People are slowly pushing west, claiming more land, guided mostly by The Line. This was a good story with some neat hooks tying it to the larger tale of _The Half-Made World_. ![]() ![]() Their family had come from humble beginnings, and while they are extremely wealthy now, there is a lot of responsibility on her shoulders to maintain their place in society. This results in a huge scandal and sets in motion the ultimatum from their parents to marry respectably. The book begins with one of the three, Dom Kilburn, escaping his own wedding, since he felt he wasn’t good enough for his fiancée – he is aided in this escape by his groomsmen Kieran and Finn Ransome. ![]() ![]() The basic plot is that three male friends, (who are, of course, hedonistic bachelors who have no real desire to settle down) must find suitable respectable women to marry or there will be no more funds from the parents to maintain their usual lifestyles. I really enjoyed Eva Leigh’s earlier books in this genre, but this one was rather predictable. I’d forgotten how formulaic a lot of these books are now, especially by authors that churn out several in a short time. I haven’t read much historical romance lately, and after reading this one I may not again for awhile. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wilder and I had one rule: our Gifts must remain a secret, no matter the circumstances. Moving like a cougar, I darted through the alleys and streets, heading towards the tavern. But a woman, especially one as small and as far from intimidating as one could get, couldn’t look at the stars for long in a place like this, and I had a job to do, so I redirected my attention to the cobblestone alley ahead. The bright stars twinkled in the pitch black sky above and I sucked in a deep breath of smoke and other foul stenches of the city. Perhaps our foolish and wild hearts wanted to taste the forbidden while we still could. Perhaps that’s why my brother and I made camp here. ![]() Port Hunya burned with a wickedness that drew the scoundrels from high and afar. Patrick might be one of my favorite male leads that Jody has ever written, joining the ranks of Karl from A Noble Groom and Benjamin from Rebellious Heart. And speaking of Josiah – he was adorable! I love that Jody wrote a child into the story and that he was realistic and believable. When she meets Patrick and his young son Josiah, her desire for a family looks to be fulfilled and watching them grow into their roles was one of my favorite parts of the story. Her hopes for her life and her fears made her real to me, and the way her past colored her present felt genuine. Emma possesses a genuine sweetness that falls completely within her nature. I think one reason that I felt so connected to this story were the characters. The plot is simple, yet flows so easily to what I thought was a lovely conclusion. The historical details about the isolated life of a light housekeeper were descriptive without being overdone. As I got further into the story, I found all of the elements that I love about Jody Hedlund’s stories.
